City Walks wraps up a successful in-person return after two-year hiatus

For two years, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Charlotte City Walks from hosting in-person walking tours to introduce people to the history, food, culture and challenges facing our diverse neighborhoods.

In 2020, the program was canceled. In 2021, City Walks went virtual, offering self-guided video tours and tours via the Clio app.

This year, City Walks – based on the international Jane’s Walks walking tours honoring famed urbanist Jane Jacobs – returned for two weeks. Despite the abbreviated schedule, the program was a success, with all walks sold out and waiting lists for many.

Charlotte City Walks 2022 included:

  • 17 in-person walks
  • 322 total attendees
  • 219 unique attendees (some people attended more than one walk)

City Walks is a free, community-led program facilitated by the Urban Institute. Next year, we hope to bring back the ever-popular “munching tours,” which feature stops at different restaurants in Charlotte neighborhoods illustrating the history and diversity of this city and its cuisine.

You can find more information and a full list of 2022 walks, as well as virtual walks still available, on the City Walks website.
