urbanCORE, UNC Charlotte’s hub for engaged scholarship, welcomes faculty interested in our Community-Oriented Research Engagement (CORE) series.
We are working with the Office of School and Community Partnerships in the Cato College of Education to offer workshops, panels, brown bags, and other events to support those who do the multifaceted work of community engagement.
Whether you are curious about how community engagement works, or a veteran, community-engaged scholar, we invite you to attend!
CORE series for faculty
The CORE Series is a group of events designed to support faculty conducting community-engaged research. Our spring events respond to what faculty told us they want and need: events that help them build community and make progress on their goals. All events are in Sycamore 306 and include snacks and drinks.
CORE SERIES EVENTS
Writing Group Launch (Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.)
Attendees are invited to review what makes writing groups successful and join a small group of writers with shared goals.
UNC Charlotte is an institutional member of Campus Compact, a professional association focused on advancing community and civic engagement in higher education. Compact is now inviting participation in a virtual faculty learning community that is free for institutional members.
The series runs November-May and the first of six meetings was held on Nov. 9, 3 p.m.-5 p.m.

Peer Group Launch (Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.)
Attendees will be invited to identify goals shared with others and join a like-minded group.
Workshop on Publishing in Community Engagement (Wednesday, Feb. 28, 10 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.)
Participants are invited to: learn what kind of publications community-engaged research can yield and make a plan for applying this knowledge to their own work.
Half-day Writing Retreat (Friday, April 5, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
We welcome participants who want to make progress on a writing project of any kind–teaching, research, service, or personal. Emphasis will be on writing in community with others, trying out writing strategies, and setting small achievable goals. Coffee and pastries start at 8:30.

PAST CORE SERIES
Community-engaged Learning Community Meets November 2023 – May 2024

The series runs November-May and the first of six meetings was held on Nov. 9, 3 p.m.-5 p.m.

Participants will draft a community-engaged course syllabus or course proposal, pedagogical resources, and a plan for course implementation. If you are registering for the Campus Compact sessions and want to join in community with others at Charlotte taking the course, urbanCORE invites you to add your contact info to this short form.
In the virtual sessions, you will join faculty across institutions, disciplines, and varying levels of community engagement expertise to participate in an interactive learning community. Drawing on Welch and Plaxton-Moore’s The Craft of Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning (2019), the six Faculty Learning Community meetings will foster faculty learning about integrating community-engaged principles, practices, and pedagogies into their work. Atkins Library has purchased the Welch and Plaxton-Moore ebook for participating faculty.

urbanCORE hosted an information session about funding opportunities available through the Women and Girls Research Alliance, Community Innovation Incubator, and Gambrel Fellows to faculty conducting community-engaged research.
TIME AND LOCATION The information session was be held on September 12 at Sycamore Hall, Room 306, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
September 19: Co-Producing Solutions with Community Partners

Are you curious about community-engaged research? If so, get a snapshot from Nadia Anderson and Colleen Hammelman, two faculty members who worked on a community-engaged project addressing food insecurity in the West Boulevard corridor. This pilot for the Community Innovation Incubator resulted in plans for two food co-ops that will offer fresh produce, quality meat, and pantry items as well as a community kitchen and nutritional programming. . They will also address their work conducted through other community-campus partnerships. Refreshments will be provided. TIME AND LOCATION Professors Anderson and Hammelman presented their work and a Q & A session on September 19 from 2 p.m. -3 p.m., at Sycamore Hall, Room 306.
October 25: Engaged Faculty Lounge
Interested in community-engaged research or teaching and don’t know where to start? Do you want to discuss a CE problem with an expert? Join Kim Buch in the Engaged Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, October 25, 1:00-2:00, in Sycamore 302. During engaged faculty lounge hours, you are invited to drop in for a chat with an experienced community-engaged teacher-scholar.
Coffee, tea, and snacks provided.
