Kailas Venkitasubramanian
I lead the data science practice of the Urban institute. An engineer who turned into a social scientist and then metamorphosed as a data scientist over the years, I work at the intersection of social science disciplines including public policy, sociology, public health and education with a keen interest in quantitative analytical methods. I manage the data infrastructure of the Institute for Social Capital, support and mentor staff and students to innovate in research methods and tools, and help keep the institute’s research on the cutting edge. Prior to my current role, I served as the interim director of survey research services at the Urban Institute. Previously, I taught statistics in the College of Education and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UNC Charlotte, and coordinated a campus-wide professional development program on data science and research methods. When I’m not working, I like to write, ride motorcycles or make photographs.
