Joanne G. Carman, Ph.D. is the 2022-23 Senior Fellow for Faculty Engagement for urbanCORE and Associate Professor for Political Science and Public Administration at UNC Charlotte. She teaches in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program and is the advisor and coordinator for students in the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management. Joanne is also the Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly and over the course of her career has worked with dozens of public agencies and nonprofit organizations conducting program evaluation and applied research. The overarching goal of her research and evaluation is to improve the way public and nonprofit services are provided by focusing on organizational capacity building, program evaluation, leadership, and governance. Her work has appeared in a number of journals, including the American Journal of Evaluation, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, New Directions for Evaluation, The Foundation Review, and the American Review of Public Administration. In 2020, Joanne was awarded the university’s Bonnie E. Cone Professorship in Civic Engagement, an award given to faculty whose teaching and research embody the university’s commitment to civic involvement.
